The Gals Behind Gal about the Globe:

Founder, Desiree Prieto's love affair with the world began at only sixteen years old, when she performed in Australia's famous Sydney Opera House with her hometown's youth orchestra. That spurred her to live in Europe during college, where she studied at John Cabot University in Rome, Italy, and was asked to give an address at the Gorbachev Foundation’s World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates. From there, she moved on to London, England, where she worked with Twenty Twenty TV on the 2005 Indie Award-winning BBC and ITV production "That’ll Teach ‘Em Too." After graduating, she continued to live in Rome and Europe for almost two years, returning to the U.S. to manage one of the largest traveling exhibits to tour North America: Clear Channel Exhibition’s The St. Peter and the Vatican Exhibit. She continued her international, jet-setting career as an operations manager for one of Chicago’s premier European tour operators.

Desiree’s career as a freelance arts, fashion and travel writer includes working for the Emmy-award winning NBC Chicago Street Team, with articles syndicated in New York, D.C., Dallas, Baltimore, San Antonio and South Texas. She’s covered the art and business of fashion in Chicago, New York, San Antonio and is also working on her first book, a witty and personal piece of creative non-fiction about the economic challenges facing young women today.

Desiree has a B.A. and M.A. in English Literature and begins working on her M.F.A. in Creative Writing in Europe this summer.

Araceli Cardenas

Araceli Cardenas is a freelance journalist currently living in Rome. Araceli, who is originally from Corpus Christi, Texas, graduated from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio with a Master of Arts in Communication Studies. Her passion for culture came at an early age. She was raised in a bilingual English and Spanish household, which taught her to embrace diversity without limitations.

By the age of 25, Araceli had traveled throughout Latin America, Cuba, Haiti, the Caribbean and Europe while working as an account executive, reporter and producer for two major networks, Telemundo and NBC. In 2006, she moved to Rome and began working as a project consultant for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. She took a year off in 2008 to pursue the opportunity of a lifetime by signing on with Rome Reports (RR), an independent TV news agency that produces news coverage and documentaries on the Vatican for media organizations around the world. Currently at the United Nations as a communications specialist, Araceli is also the creator and host of Rome Today, a production featuring the best of Italy. The show includes food and wine segments, art, history, culture and more. When she’s not in the kitchen she dedicates her expertise to covering international news with Rome Today TV. The company offers its own correspondents or “stringers” to report breaking news on behalf of television networks that do not have a correspondent in Italy.

Although she is currently based in Rome, she splits her time between the United States and Europe in the company of her extended Italian Mexican-American family. She firmly believes that “Mille viae ducunt homines per saecula Romam – All Roads Lead to Rome!” Therefore, Araceli travels freely throughout Italy knowing everyone has their own story to share…and it all starts in the kitchen!
